LOVE - an Essential Nutrient?

Breakfast is one of the most treasured rituals that most people keep. Setting the stage for the day ahead, do you ever think of how you nourish yourself in those early hours as an opportunity to welcome warmth and love in? The phrase ‘you are what you eat’ is often dismissed and seen as flippant, but we are curiously nudging that notion further and inspiring people to really ponder it. The food you consume - its nutrients and energy - are physiologically transforming and fuelling your body, each and every moment. When you really think about it, isn’t that incredible?  Every step of the way, Made with Local foods are sourced, produced, and delivered with care. Our production kitchens hum with good vibes and a deep culture of love and appreciation for the ingredients that come in and for the finished, yummy products that go out. So when we say that our Real Food Bars and Loaded Oats ar...

Introducing Paralympian Andrew Todd - MwL Powered Athlete!

We are so excited to have Andrew aboard our team of Made with Local - fuelled athletes. Andrew has a pretty incredible story and has been making waves (no pun intended) in the Paralympic Rowing world, with a gold at the  2016 World Rowing Cup III and a bronze medal at the 2016 Rio de Janiero Paralympic Games just three years after a horrific accident that left his right leg permanently weakened due to muscle and nerve damage. Read on to learn more about Andrew's journey into chasing his next dreams!  The Start of a New QuadThis has been my first month back training on the west coast in Victoria, BC. It is a very exciting time for me, since it is the start of a new quadrennial (4-year period leading up to the next Olympic/Paralympic Summer games), which means new challenges, new opportunities, and a fresh start! There are a lot of returning athletes from the last quadrennial, as well a...

Handmade with Local Love - Our Social Enterprise Bakery

We get asked all the time - where are our delicious Real Food Bars and Loaded Oats made? We are always excited to tell folks about the amazing production partners that we've been working with since 2014. In the very beginning (2012), MwL founders Sheena & Kathy baked every bar themselves, after-hours at a friend's cafe. With Kathy expecting her first baby in 2013 and Sheena in 2014, it was time to find a company that we could trust to make our foods for us. As a small business owner it's hard to imagine someone else putting the same love & care into producing your products, but our dreams came true when we were approached by the folks at The Flowercart Group. The Flower Cart Group is a community of social enterprises serving a dual purpose – working to provide employment training opportunities that enrich the lives of participants, and adding value for local food businesses....

Delivering on Our Promise

Every time our company does something huge, all I can think about is how grateful I am for all the people who've helped us reach this new height. Suppliers, producers, mentors, family, friends, our superstar-customers...you guys are just the best! For over a year we've (quietly) been telling the many dozens, if not hundreds of folks who've asked us when they'll be able to get our Real Food Bars in their grocery store, that it was going to happen soon. We promised.  So we're BEYOND excited to finally announce...  OUR REAL FOOD BARS ARE AVAILABLE AT SOBEYS! We've been bustin' ass to get our production ramped up and the super awesome display boxes designed (thank you, Cameron and the team at Rarebird!) and they've come in the knick of time. We are SO thrilled and we hope we'll be reaching a whole new community of folks who fall in love with the flavour and story of our foods.  Aga...

2015. You Were a Doozy.

In many ways, Made with Local was re-born this year. It was the beginning of some seriously big/scary/enlivening leaps that have allowed our little business to come closer to realizing who it really is.  Last winter was a tough one for us. Business doubts. Sales-halting back-to-back snowstorms. Big decisions. At home with a 6 month old and going (more than) a little shack wacky. Yup, behind the scenes here at MwL we are real folks. Women in their early 30's mostly, with little kids (including a brand-spankin new babe for Kathy), undoubtedly a screw loose, and a vision to build a truly community-rooted healthy foods company. But as it does, the universe sent us a few nudges in the Spring, and our little business had a light shone on it by some amazing humans who are now irreplaceable members of the MwL team and we just friggin' went for it. Ramped up production and went pedal to the me...

New Beginnings at MwL!

Folks, this summer has been a doozy at MwL. With the briskness of Fall comes growth, change and excitement - on the personal and business front; although when you own a small business those two things can seem pretty damn intertwined. Big fun news first - I (Sheena) got hitched last weekend on PEI! I still do call PEI 'Home' even though I've lived in Dartmouth for 5 years. The plan is to eventually be 'bi-provincial', because that's a thing, right? The wedding was simple and joyous, the weather was incredible, there was a lot of fairly aggressive dancing happening all night...so yeah. It was perfect!  On the topic of my beloved PEI - we're SUPER stoked to have our bars at Freshii in Charlottetown! It's our first Charlottetown location with hopefully more to come. It means so much to us to be embraced by my hometown and we are friggin' tickled to see MwL bars just flying off the shel...

Meet our Farmers! Barnyard Organics Edition

Since day one, Kathy and I have built Made with Local with the intent of telling the stories of Atlantic Canadian farmers and food producers; connecting people with those who grow the food that nourishes us. As our little farmer’s market stall has grown, so has the daily tasks of keeping this ‘little train that could’ chugging along. We share lots of links and facts via our social media platforms, but man, sometimes we wish we could just scream these farmers & producers’ stories from the mountaintops because they’re so damn amazing. Sally, Mark, and three of their now four kids, at Barnyard Organics Farm in Freetown, PEI. The story of Mark and Sally (is that a John Mellencamp song?) is one that truly energizes us. They’re two young, multi-generational farmers who decided that they’d take the road less travelled and dive in to Mark’s family’s 500acre farm in PEI, rebrand...

Get to Know - Loaded Oats!

We MwL ladies are die-hard oatmeal lovers. Every morning starts with a bowl, devoured and washed down with a mug of something hot & caffeinated. Being eyeball-deep in our RealFood Bars since 2012 and perfecting their recipes using Maritime-produced ingredients, we realized about a year ago that we could also make a hot cereal using some of those same foods. Who’s Involved? We contacted the amazing folks at Speerville Mill in New Brunswick and chatted with them about our ideas for a 100% locally-sourced instant oatmeal. They developed a special cut of oatmeal for us, and it is the best of both worlds! Cooks up in a flash (90 seconds!) but has the amazing texture and nuttiness of a steel cut oat, without slaving over a stove for 20 minutes. We’ve added flaxseed from Valley Flax Flour in Middleton, NS and dried fruit fromTerra Beata in Lunenburg, NS. These 3 main ingredients are it...
