We are so excited to have Andrew aboard our team of Made with Local - fuelled athletes. Andrew has a pretty incredible story and has been making waves (no pun intended) in the Paralympic Rowing world, with a gold at the 2016 World Rowing Cup III and a bronze medal at the 2016 Rio de Janiero Paralympic Games just three years after a horrific accident that left his right leg permanently weakened due to muscle and nerve damage.
Read on to learn more about Andrew's journey into chasing his next dreams!
The Start of a New Quad
This has been my first month back training on the west coast in Victoria, BC. It is a very exciting time for me, since it is the start of a new quadrennial (4-year period leading up to the next Olympic/Paralympic Summer games), which means new challenges, new opportunities, and a fresh start! There are a lot of returning athletes from the last quadrennial, as well as some new faces, which is very exciting to see as we push each other in the daily training environment.
Upon returning from Rio, I spent the fall out on the east coast in Halifax taking some time away from the full time training environment, and absolutely loved it. The east coast environment and culture had an incredible way of re-energizing my mind and body. The rowing community welcomed me with open arms, and I took pleasure training on Lake Banook in Dartmouth with the Halifax/Dartmouth Rowing community. It reminded me why I love the sport so much, and made me look forward to returning to train full time and throw everything I have at being the best that I can be.
Although this an exciting time, I will admit that the first month was a bit of a balancing act. Primarily, the challenges of settling into a new training structure, as well as a new living situation were both very evident. Not to mention, the move ACROSS THE COUNTRY from east to west was very hectic too!
I cannot thank MWL enough for all of the support they have given me in my first month back in BC! I felt like I was always on the run, whether to a training session, appointment, team meeting, etc. Their bars and instant oats saved me on more than one occasion.
It is very comforting to know that I had a simple, healthy, high quality product with no extra additives in it that I could consume before or after practice (or sometimes both!). My favourite morning pre-row breakfast consisted of a cup of MWL instant oats mixed with plain yogurt and honey. On top of that, their wide selection of bars has kept me going during long sessions where my I can feel my glycogen stores starting to fall.
Thank you so much for welcoming me into your MWL family!
