August Community Project - Building a Safe Space with TLC Outreach

August Community Project - Building a Safe Space with TLC Outreach

August 01, 2017

About a month ago I received an out-of-the-blue phone call from a woman named Anne. She spoke kindly and passionately about an organization that she recently began working for, called TLC Outreach, a not-for-profit located newly in North Dartmouth, just a few blocks from my home and the Made with Local office.

Anne's personal story compelled me, as she has come from years of adversity, finding herself in a women's shelter upon returning here to Nova Scotia after years out West. Here in Halifax she was connected with Lori Graves, the founder of TLC Outreach and began counselling, and was then offered a position to work at TLC, helping to get their new Windmill Rd location up and running.

The timing of this chat with Anne struck me, as she rang just as I was packing up my car to head to beautiful PEI for a few days of R&R. The need for support of mental illness and addictions is unrelenting. There are no vacations from it.

Anne's been hustling the phones, reaching out to the community looking for partners to bring Lori's dream to life - a safe, judgement-free space where folks with addictions, mental illness, homelessness can come and receive counselling and personalized support, by way of social enterprise projects.

There's a huge need for this kind of 'interim' support for folks in desperate situations, as wait times for addictions and mental health programs are lengthy. Although TLC focuses their effort on personal counselling and support and not medical programming, simply having their space, open and ready, for people in the North Dartmouth is a significant asset to our community.

For the next 2 weeks, we will be donating all proceeds of MwL products in our online shop to TLC Outreach in Dartmouth, NS. Our donations will be going towards renovating their current space to accommodate more clients, helping out with operating costs and help purchase equipment to support their social enterprise programs.

We love to give whenever we can, and know that giving keeps the cycle of abundance flowing. "Great things are done by a series of small things brought together" - Van Gogh
